Fashion to Lift Your Mood

Is it just me, or is life crazy busy at the moment? Between work and family I have extra-curricular activities galore and the beginnings of a cold to contend with. When this happens, what I’m going to wear takes a back seat to pretty much everything else and I resort back to my tried and true wardrobe basics. Then, if I have a second to spare before I run out the door I’ll add a little something to lift my mood. It might be a piece of clothing that fits perfectly, a colour I love or a fabulous accessory. Here are a few pieces that I wore this week that made me happy.   The back detail and the shape of this top from SheInside sets it apart from others in my wardrobe – it’s fitted at the bust and then flares at the waist to create a flattering look.   2. This necklace from Kayelle is so very me. I love the colours and symmetrical design and it’s ability to transform a plain top. It’s the perfect accessory to add at the last minute when you’re short on time.     3. I created this ‘dress’ with two separate pieces – the convertible dress and smoothing top both from Intimo. I’ve worn the dress as a strapless dress – I love the length when it’s worn strapless – but, I don’t like showing too much shoulder. My answer? Pop the smoothing top on underneath!   4. This metallic clutch from Atelier Confidentiel adds some sparkle to my outfit below. Who doesn’t need a little sparkle every once in a while?!     What mood lifting...

Winter Holiday Essentials

My husband and I recently took our five year old son and three year old daughter to Queenstown, NZ for a week. Queenstown is an awesome place for kids – there’s so much to do – and we even found some snow, which was such a thrill for my little loves. If you’re in charge of the packing in the lead up to a family holiday, there’s a lot to remember and you’re always bound to forget something, like the time we took our then 1 year old (teething) son to Thailand. We remembered the baby Panadol but forgot the syringe, which resulted in some in-flight drama (read:screaming). This time the only thing I forgot to pack was my sleepwear, which was easily fixed with a quick trip to Peter Alexander! Now for the essentials that made my life so much easier on this holiday: 1. Cross Body Bag from Caramel and Co $89.95 A cross body bag keeps your hands free, which means you can hold onto important things like your children, your suitcase or other random things that your kids pick up (what sort of cafe puts macarons on a table at the perfect height for my three year old anyway?!). This one was big enough to hold all our passports, travel documents, my wallet, phone etc so was great for getting through the airports as well as our day trips.   2. Hunter Gumboots from  The Iconic $198.00 Now, I’ll admit it – I bought these boots because I saw Kate Middleton wear them. Having said that, these boots kept my feet both warm and dry in the snow....

How to Wear: Layers

My method for dressing is actually pretty simple.  I invest in quality basics (eg. great fitting jeans, beautifully soft cotton tees, LBD etc.) and then I add layer after layer of on trend, seasonal pieces.  Here are some of the key wardrobe items that help to make layering a cinch. The Collared Shirt We all have one – try wearing it underneath a dress, shirt or a short sleeved cardigan to ensure both layers are visible.   Striped shirt from SheIn; $25.30       Leggings/Jeggings Black is obviously more versatile, but leggings/jeggings in different colours can really change up your look. Wear them underneath a dress or an on trend tunic. Another tip: leggings are NOT pants, whereas jeggings ARE (they often have pockets at both the front and the back) so ensure that whatever you wear on top of your leggings covers your bottom. Please. And, moving right along…     Black Leggings (Slim Line Pants from Intimo); $109.50 (send me an email to order: lily.thestylishteacher@gmail.com).       A Vest This season offers vests varying from mid-length (ending at your hip) to long line (ending at your ankle).  Invest in a neutral toned vest, such as brown, tan, beige, black or white so that it can be easily paired with your existing wardrobe, or go for some faux fur to add some texture to your outfit.   Bohemian Traders Vegan Suede Waterfall Vest in Camel; $209.00       Scarf/Belt/Accessories These are the finishing touches to your outfit and create another layer of interest, so don’t forget about them!   Atelier Confidentiel Wrap Around Leather Bracelets in Gold, Beehive Textured Caramel and Black; $50 each.       What...

How To Wear: Ankle Boots

We are well and truly into ankle boot season now. Have you embraced this trend? Do you have a pair of ankle boots in your wardrobe, but unsure how to style them? So many women I speak to own at least one pair of ankle boots, or want to, but feel a bit lost with how to wear them without looking cut off at the ankles, and therefore shorter. I find ankle boots to be really comfortable to wear, a little edgy and extremely versatile, and I wear them right through Autumn, Winter and Spring. How? Here’s a few guidelines:           Wearing Ankle Boots With a Skirt or Dress When keeping your legs bare, wear ankle boots that are a neutral shade such as beige, tan or brown. Ankle boots look fantastic with tights of the same colour – black tights with black boots for example – elongate your legs for a streamlined look. Play around with different heel heights and boot lengths – these will suit (or not) depending on your height, and the length of your skirt or dress. Wearing Ankle Boots With Pants Skinny jeans, jeggings or pants that are tapered at your ankle should be worn tucked into your boots. Wearing leggings? Always, always, always tuck them in. When you’re wearing pants that are a looser style, such as boot cut or boyfriend jeans, cuff your pants so you see a little skin in between your pants and your boots. This draws the eye down to the thinnest part of your leg for a flattering, slimming look.   Whether you’re wearing a dress or...

Basics: The Smoothing Top

Last week I introduced you to Intimo’s convertible black dress that is now pretty much all sold out (except in the Medium size, so let me know ASAP if you’d like to order!). But don’t worry if you missed out this time – there’ll be another drop of these in July. This week it’s all about the Smoothing Top ($95). Ladies, kiss goodbye to any lumps and bumps you might have – the double layering of fabric in the front panel of this top smooths them all away! I love this top as a layering piece, especially in the cooler months of the year. It’s perfect for wearing underneath vests, cardigans, jackets, blazers… As with every Intimo product, this top is of the highest quality. Not only will it last forever, but you’ll be able to wear it to work, play – everywhere. Plus, it’s always available in lots of different colours – black, white, chestnut, desert rose, silver lake blue, orchid pink and eggshell blue. Need to make one of these tops yours? You can place your order with me by emailing me at: lily.thestylishteacher@gmail.com with your phone number so we can arrange a time to have a chat. Lily...
