The Sisterhood of the Travelling Gift

Do you love giving people gifts? What’s not to love – shopping, wrapping, the joy you bring to others – it’s fabulously fun. So when I found out about The Sisterhood of the Travelling Gift – Christmas in July I knew I wanted to join in straight away. If you haven’t heard of #tsottg, allow me to back track a little. The girls behind this idea are Barbe (@fashionista_in_suburbia), Andrea (@icadoo) and Zoe (@aquirkybird) who originally met through an event organised by Fox in Flats. Basically you’re partnered up with a ‘secret sister’ to buy a gift for within a $30 budget. You’re given a questionnaire to answer so that your ‘sister’ has clues regarding your likes, dislikes etc. I love how Zoe described this initiative as a ”virtual hug” and Andrea explained it as something ”to put some smiles on secret sisters faces”. To be honest, I had enough feel good vibes simply from the giving side of this activity. But then – BONUS – my gift arrived from the lovely Shari (@goodfoodweek), who chose to identify herself instead of remaining a ‘secret sister’ (and I’m so glad she did so I could thank her!). Following on from all this gift giving, Alida and I decided to make this week’s theme for #wearwithuswednesday Gifted Fashion. So of course I wore my beautiful scarf from Shari. Did you join in #tsottg? Or #wearwithuswednesday this week? I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments below… Lily...

WWUW: Label Love

The first week back at school is always a challenge, but this week I had just returned from a gorgeous, balmy Fiji to the chilliest Brisbane in 10 years. With a head cold and a husband on death row with ‘man flu’ nonetheless. It was a rude shock! Needless to say, a simply themed #wearwithuswednesday was in order! I chose ‘Label Love’ because even though I like to shop around, there are certain brands that always come through with the goods – great basics and super on-trend pieces – ‘go to’ brands if you like. Any good stylist will advise you to never go shopping before you’ve done a wardrobe analysis or audit – you should know the gaps – what your wardrobe is lacking first. So when I notice a trend, say for example khaki or marsala, and I know I don’t already own these colours (because I’ve already audited my wardrobe 😜), there are certain labels that I’ll go to to fill this gap. One is Witchery and the other is a label I discovered earlier this year called Shabby Sisters. No doubt you’ve already discovered Witchery for yourself. I just love shopping in store with them (my favourite is Toombul) for their incredible service and product knowledge. I always end up buying more than I intend to! Shabby Sisters is an online boutique created by two Brisbane sisters. They stock beautiful, on-trend jewellery, bags and clothing at really affordable prices. If you haven’t discovered this duo yet, you can check them out at www.shabbysisters.com.au This week my lovely Instagram and Facebook friends shared their ‘go to’...

Interview: 5 Minutes With Mel From Zooki Melbourne

Have you discovered Zooki Melbourne yet? This cool, funky Australian brand recently launched and I for one am super excited! The brand is best described in the words of Mel – the designer – in our recent interview… 1. Tell us about the philosophy behind ZOOKI… ZOOKI is my artistic expression.  The name is a combination of two words: ‘zoo’, a collection of designs for public display, and ‘ki’ (chi), which is the circulating life force that is the basis of Chinese philosophy.  It is a tribute to my Australian / Chinese-Malaysian dual heritage.  As I design and craft jewellery and accessories that reflects my current mood and lifestyle, it’s a completely a self-indulgent hobby!  I will always consider ZOOKI as a hobby and never a business, as once I start thinking in terms of margins and stock turn and pricing strategies, then the passion dies and I just become another ‘retailer’ in cyber space.  I craft everything in small quantities because I appreciate preserving the exclusivity of the piece, and I use a combination of new and rescued textiles.  Repurposing rescued textiles is part of my #threadrescueproject – saving one garment at a time from ending up in landfill.  ZOOKI is: minimal, chic, textured, inventive, fun and honest. 2. Who are your style icons? My modern style icons are Olivia Palermo, Alexa Chung and Miranda Kerr – all for different reasons.  I find Olivia’s art of layering textures and silhouettes inspiring and she has impeccable taste in shoes.  Alexa’s cool and nonchalant approach to fashion is refreshing and I love that she can poke fun at herself and not...

On Trend: Shades of Grey

I am massively crushing on all things grey at the moment, and one of the things I love most about this hue is it’s diversity. From soft and elegant shades to strong and sporty – this is a colour that can be styled in almost any way. It’s possible that you have one or two grey pieces in your wardrobe already. If you’re planning a seasonal wardrobe update, start with what you already have. Got a grey scarf? Pair it with skinny jeans and a simple white tee. How about a grey top? Pair it with classic black pants and some chic accessories. Grey is timeless and there is plenty of it hitting the shops right now. If you’re looking to update your wardrobe this season, grey is the colour to buy. Check out some of my favourite grey pieces from one of my favourite chain stores – Witchery – below. Shades of grey is the theme for this week’s #wearwithuswednesday. Alida from @brisbaneteacherstyle and I would love you to join in. Simply wear grey on Wednesday and share your pic with us on Instagram or Facebook by tagging us @the_stylish_teacher and @brisbaneteacherstyle and using the hashtag #wearwithuswednesday. Lily...
